DISCOVER WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE DIES

When a loved one passes away, it can be difficult to know where to begin. J & J Lindsay of Girvan is here to support you. Arrange an appointment to speak with us, and receive tailored advice and support from our team.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES IN DIFFICULT TIMES

At J & J Lindsay, we’re committed to supporting families through what is often the most difficult time in their lives: the loss of a loved one. Our team is here to help, and advise on everything that happens next. We offer a personal, compassionate service, and are here to support you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We have been helping families throughout Girvan and the wider area since 1932, and will do all we can to ensure you and your family can give your loved one the perfect send-off.

REGISTERING A DEATH

Any death in Scotland must be registered with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. This has to be done within 8 days. In order to issue a death certificate, they will need to see the medical certificate of death produced by the deceased’s doctor.

For more information, please view the Scottish Government’s website, gov.scot.

What do I need to do?

This depends on where exactly your loved one passes away:

  • At home. Your doctor should be contacted right away, as well as the police if the death was violent, sudden or accidental. Your doctor will provide a medical certificate of death, confirming the cause of death. In the case of unexpected deaths, a Procurator Fiscal may need to be involved.

  •  In a hospital. You (or the next of kin) will be contacted if they were not present at the time. The hospital will provide the certificate, and may also involve the Procurator Fiscal if the death was unexpected.

  • In a care home. A member of staff (usually a manager) will contact the next of kin. The individual’s GP will arrange for a certificate the death was expected/if there are no suspicious circumstances.
